Loyola University Chicago announced today that Markeda Newell, PhD, has been appointed Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, effective July 1, 2024. Newell has served as Interim Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs since 2023 and is an associate professor of school psychology in the School of Education.
As the lead administrator on faculty matters, she has worked with academic leaders across campuses to enhance Loyola’s efforts to support faculty from recruitment to retirement. Newell will continue to lead initiatives including creating new policies and procedures to support faculty; overseeing promotion, tenure and review processes; new faculty orientation, mentoring, and faculty development programs; initiatives to recruit and retain underrepresented faculty; and sabbaticals and faculty awards.
“Dr. Newell is respected across the University for her insight, initiative, and commitment to supporting faculty excellence,” said Provost Margaret Callahan. “As she continues in this critical leadership role on the Provost Leadership Team, Dr. Newell will work to ensure that our faculty, who are at the very core of the academic endeavor, have everything they need to foster educational experiences that enrich students’ lives.”
Newell joined Loyola in 2017 as program chair and graduate program director of school psychology within the School of Education, before being named senior associate dean for resources, planning, and faculty affairs in 2019. Since 2021 she has also served as interim dean for the School of Education.
Newell earned her BS in Elementary Education at the University of Southern Mississippi before going on to obtain her MS and PhD in Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before joining Loyola’s School of Education, Newell was an assistant professor in school psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
