The Loyola University Chicago Black Alumni Board will host the Annual Mamie Till-Mobley Scholarship Gala Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Kasbeer Hall, Corboy Law Center.
Broadcaster Art Norman of NBC 5 will serve as master of ceremonies for the black-tie event. The keynote speaker is Lester Barclay, CEO and Founder of the Barclay Law Group, who will tell the story of how he was mentored by Mamie Till-Mobley, when she was a public school teacher in Chicago.
Proceeds from the gala benefit Loyola’s Mamie Till-Mobley Scholarship Fund. The scholarship, sponsored by the Black Alumni Board, elevates Mamie Till-Mobley’s courage, wisdom, creativity, and strength for generations of Loyola students.
Mamie Till-Mobley’s 14 year-old son, Emmett Till, was brutally murdered in 1955 by racist vigilantes in Mississippi. Her refusal to let the country ignore his death ignited the civil rights movement and inspired others to activism. Till-Mobley channeled her passion for justice and her love for children into advocacy and a career as a teacher in Chicago schools. A 1971 graduate of Loyola University Chicago’s Graduate School of Education, she embodied the university’s commitment to care for the whole person and knowledge in service to humanity. Loyola established a scholarship in her honor in 2022.
