Black History Month Reception honors culture and community

On February 13, over 200 members of the Loyola community gathered on the Lake Shore Campus for the annual Black History Month reception to celebrate Black culture and leadership. Hosted by the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in partnership with the Division of Student Development, the event presented opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to reaffirm their commitment to supporting Loyola’s Black community and creating a culture of belonging.  

Held in the Sister Jean Multipurpose Room, the event featured live entertainment, food from cultures across the Black diaspora, and artwork and reflections from student leaders Hailey Binion, Ajani Cunningham, Taylor Shields, and Emily Harvey. The event culminated in a keynote address and Q&A session with activist and academic Marc Lamont Hill.

In his address, Dr. Hill discussed how personal histories and contexts shape present experiences, encouraging attendees to create meaningful transformations in their own lives. Hill also emphasized the importance of “radical listening,” highlighting how genuine engagement with one another can strengthen community and inspire change.

The Black History Month Reception 2025 celebrated Black history and culture while inspiring ongoing action to create a culture of belonging and inclusive excellence at Loyola.
