Patrick M. Green receives the 2022 Barbara A. Holland Scholar-Administrator Award
CHICAGO, IL – January 9, 2023
Patrick M. Green, EdD, Executive Director of the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, & Scholarship (CELTS) at Loyola University Chicago, was awarded the 2022 Barbara A. Holland Scholar-Administrator Award by The Coalition or Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), which recognizes the growing need for research-informed leadership in higher education.
“On behalf of the CUMU executive committee, I want to congratulate Dr. Green on his success as a scholar-administrator,” said Valerie Holton, executive director, CUMU. “His administrative leadership, scholarship, and applied practice uplifts the urban mission and honors the award’s namesake.”
Dr. Green, serving in higher education as a space-creator, pathway-paver, and systems-changer, began his tenure at Loyola as the founding director of the Center for Experiential Learning in 2007, was appointed executive director in 2018, and lead its transition into the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship (CELTS) in 2020.
CELTS has evolved to elevate and explore place-based approaches to engaged scholarship, highlight critical service-learning with a justice-orientation, and position community partners as co-educators. And, under Green’s leadership, CELTS has become a model for community engagement centers across higher education.
“I am honored to be recognized for my role as a scholar-administrator and to receive this award,” said Green. “As a scholar-administrator I seek to elevate new voices, uncover new approaches and methodologies, feature new epistemological approaches, and develop new scholarship. My scholarly works are deeply informed by my teaching and learning practice and my professional experience as an administrator leader.”
Green is also a clinical assistant professor in the School of Education. Through CELTS and the School of Education, he teaches experiential learning courses, including community-based learning, academic internships, global service-learning, and undergraduate research, as well as graduate courses in the Higher Education Program.
“For the past 20+ years I have served in the role of an educator at the intersection of community-based teaching and learning, urban education, and community partnership. My hybrid roles have been boundary-spanning, third-space professional roles which have formed my approach as a scholar-administrator,” said Green.
“Dr. Green clearly exemplifies the mission of Loyola University Chicago and our commitment to provide a transformative education to our students. This is an education that helps our students lead exemplary lives,” said Margaret Faut Callahan, provost and chief academic officer. “His innovative approaches to student learning and engagement are replicated University wide and highly valued by our students.”
Additionally, Green has served in other leadership roles at Loyola, including on the Provost Search Committee (2018–2020) and the University Strategic Planning Committee (2019–2020) and as interim assistant provost for student academic services (2019–2020).
Green is coeditor of Crossing Boundaries: Tension and Transformation in International Service-Learning (Stylus Publishing, 2014), Re-conceptualizing Faculty Development in Service-Learning/Community Engagement: Exploring Intersections, Frameworks, and Models of Practice (Stylus Publishing, 2018), Guest Editor of Metropolitan Universities Journal special issue on faith and community engagement (December, 2020), and guest editor of Experiential Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ELTHE, fall 2021 and spring 2022). He is serving as a co-editor for an upcoming Metropolitan Universities Journal special issue on place-based pedagogy and anchor initiatives in spring 2023, and the International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IJRSLCE) in fall 2023. Green serves as a Scholar-in-Residence with the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSCLE), an Engaged Scholar with the Society of Experiential Education (SEE), and an Engaged Scholar with National Campus Compact.
Green was honored with an award presentation this fall at the 2022 CUMU Annual Conference in San Diego, CA.
