Loyola’s a cappella groups to showcase vocal talent at “Acafriendzy”

March 18, 2025

On March 22 at noon in Palm Court in Mundelein Center, Loyola a cappella groups will hold the annual Acafriendzy concert where all Loyola a cappella groups will perform a selection of songs.

Loyola has six a cappella groups for students to join: Acafellas, Counterpoint, The LUC Jazzuits, LUC Silhouettes, Loyolacapella, and LUC RAAG —each with its own style and tradition. Open to students of all majors, these groups hold auditions at the start of each semester, requiring singers to perform one song a cappella. Meet the groups performing at Acafriendzy:

Acafellas

The Acafellas were founded in 2003 and are a tenor and bass vocal group. Their most recent concert, “An Acafellas Murder Mystery,” featured songs that led up to the reveal of a “murderer. Rehearsals typically take place once to twice a week during the semester in Mundelein Center. Learn more about the Acafellas on Instagram and YouTube.

Counterpoint Acapella

As Loyola’s only competitive a cappella group, Counterpoint represents the university in the Varsity Vocals International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). This soprano, alto, tenor, and bass (SATB) group, founded in 2017, competes against teams nationwide. Their last concert, Counterrestrials, featured songs with an “out of this world” theme. They rehearse twice a week, with additional practices before competitions. Counterpoint can be found on Instagram and YouTube.

The LUC Jazzuits

Founded in 2017, the LUC Jazzuits specialize in vocal jazz and although they perform around Loyola, The Jazzuits have one large performance at the end of each semester. Their concerts highlight diverse musical inspirations, including their last performance, Sunday in the Park, which explored themes of nature. Their upcoming performance on April 13 will feature love songs. Watch performances and follow LUC Jazzuits on Instagram and on YouTube.

Loyolacappella

Loyolacappella, founded in 1998, is an SATB group known for its diverse song selections and engaging performances. Their last concert, Love Lockdown, explored the highs and lows of romance in honor of Valentine’s Day. They rehearse once or twice a week and perform multiple times each semester. Learn more about Loyolacappella on Instagram and YouTube.

LUC Silhouettes

Founded in 2011, LUC Silhouettes is an all-treble group (soprano and alto) that embraces a variety of genres. Their last concert, Camping with the Sils, transported audiences to a peaceful outdoor escape with calming melodies. They rehearse twice a week and perform both on campus and around Chicago. Find performances and follow the group on Instagram and YouTube

LUC RAAG

LUC RAAG is Loyola’s premier SATB South Asian fusion a cappella, specializing in creating arrangements using both Western and South Asian music. The group performs regularly on and off campus, including delivering singing Valentine’s Day grams to students and opening for fellow South Asian university vocal groups in the Chicago area. They can be found on Instagram and Youtube.

Loyola Choral Ensembles

For students seeking a for-credit vocal experience, Loyola also offers choral ensembles, which can be registered for through LOCUS. These choirs perform a mix of classical, religious, and contemporary works, sometimes debuting original pieces by international composers.

Loyola also offers several choral ensembles for students seeking a for-credit vocal experience, including University Singers, University Chorale, Liturgical Choir, and Ignatian Voices. These choirs perform a mix of classical, religious, and contemporary works, sometimes debuting original pieces by international composers.

Whether through a cappella groups or choral ensembles, Loyola offers students many avenues to share their love of music and build lasting friendships through song.
