A student feeling overwhelmed before an exam, navigating a roommate conflict, or weighing a big decision may need support without the long-term commitment. Sometimes, a conversation is enough to clear the mind. The Wellness Center’s new drop-in service, offers just that.
Let’s Talk provides students with short, informal, and confidential sessions with a Wellness Center counselor for any concern, from coping with stress to proactive problem-solving. The program was created to reach students who may not typically use Wellness Center services and break the stigma around mental health. The new service is free, requires no appointment, and operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Breaking it down
Andrea Boyd, psychologist at the Wellness Center, calls it “a low-barrier, outreach initiative designed to provide support and service entry opportunities for students less likely to seek traditional mental health services.”
Drop-in sessions last 20 to 25 minutes and take place in public spaces on the Lake Shore and Water Tower campuses. Wait times can vary, and when it’s busy, the counselor may not be able to see everyone. Students are encouraged to try again at another session.
Let’s Talk is best suited for students who have never tried counseling and wonder if it’s right for them, students who want to talk through a specific problem or mental health concern, and students curious about campus resources.
What to expect
The primary difference between Let’s Talk and a formal counseling service is the convenience of a drop-in session.
“A casual setting reminds us that mental health, like physical health or dental health, needs regular attention, ” said Dr. Boyd.
While not a replacement for regularly scheduled counseling or therapy, Let’s Talk sessions give students quick guidance at a time and place that works for them. During the session, the counselor will listen closely to concerns, provide support and perspective, and point students toward additional resources when needed. Students can refer to the Let’s Talk website for this semester’s session times and locations on the Lake Shore and Water Tower campuses.
