As the fall semester comes to a close and winter break approaches, this time of year can feel hectic as Ramblers prepare for final exams and end–of–semester projects. During the busy academic period, students are encouraged to take advantage of academic resources at Loyola and prioritize their mental health to ensure a smooth finish to the semester.
“At the end of the semester, the more students can stay balanced, the better for them and their grades,” says Brian Krylowicz, director of counseling. “Finding ways to maintain sleep schedules, exercise habits, maintain a balanced and healthy diet, and create positive social interactions is just as important when deadlines are approaching as when it is calm.”
Here are a few ways students can prepare mentally and academically for a successful end of fall semester:
Use Writing Center resources
Students can schedule in-person or written feedback appointments with the Writing Center. Tutors can provide feedback on a variety of essays and projects to assist with any writing needs.
Take part in Loyola holiday traditions
Finals season is also the start of the holiday season, so enjoy it with Loyola traditions. Get into the holiday spirit with festive music at Joyola, visit Art and Faith of the Crèche at LUMA, or attend Lessons and Carols at Madonna della Strada. Find more holiday celebrations happening at Loyola here.
Visit office hours
Attend professor office hours to discuss questions about classes, exams, or final projects. All Loyola faculty are required to hold regular office hours, so take advantage of the opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions about the course.
Participate in Wellness Center activities
The Wellness Center offers several opportunities for students to manage stress and connect with each other. Students can attend Monday Reset: Drop-In Meditation Group or sign up for a group counseling session. Find more information on counseling here. Check out the Wellness Center instagram to stay up to date on upcoming workshops.
Stay connected
Social connection can be an important support during finals season. Go to the IC with some friends or review a study guide with classmates. Check out De-Stress Fest on Water Tower Campus or stop by a Sully Session with Sullivan the Therapy Dog.
Find a creative outlet
Activities like drawing, writing, or listening to music can help relieve stress. Attend Your Brain on Art on Thursdays to unwind with an art project or do another creative activity to ease your mind during study breaks.
Stay in touch with your faith
No matter what faith you identify with, students can turn to religious organizations on campus during stressful times. Campus Ministry offers spiritual direction, support, and several faith-based student groups. Learn more here.
