Members of the Loyola University Chicago and Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary communities filed into Madonna della Strada Chapel on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning to honor the life and legacy of Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM, who died on October 9, 2025, at the age of 106.

During Wednesday’s wake and visitation, students, alumni, faculty, family, and friends gathered in quiet reflection and remembrance. Many paused before Sister Jean’s casket, surrounded by flowers, to offer personal prayers and recall her warmth, humor, and faith.

On Thursday morning, the community returned to the Chapel for the Funeral Mass—a celebration of Sister Jean’s lifelong devotion to faith, education, and service. The choir’s hymns filled the Chapel as clergy and community members reflected on her remarkable 106 years. Following the Mass, mourners processed out of the Chapel and joined a community reception in Damen Student Center, continuing to share stories and gratitude for the beloved chaplain.
