The atrium of John and Herta Cuneo Hall on the Health Sciences Campus now bears the name of a Stritch School of Medicine alumnus to commemorate his family’s extraordinary generosity in support of medical students.

In July, the space was officially named the Henry A. Hartman, MD ’30 Atrium, to honor the legacy of Dr. Hartman and the generosity of Ronald and Janet Hartman, his son and daughter-in-law. Their gifts will directly support future generations of Stritch students.

Henry A. Hartman came from modest roots and worked to put himself through medical school, graduating from Stritch in 1930. He worked in a psychiatric hospital in Kankakee, Illinois before opening his own practice. In the 1990s, Dr. Hartman created a scholarship fund at Stritch and instilled a spirit of forward-thinking generosity in his family. Now, two generations of Hartmans are supporting students at the only Jesuit, Catholic medical school in Illinois.

“Naming this central space of fellowship, friendship, and family in honor of Dr. Henry Hartman speaks to the essential relationship of foresighted donors to the life of a great medical school,” said Sam Marzo, dean of the Stritch School of Medicine. “The Hartman family name will live in this atrium, a source of light in the heart of Stritch.”
