Loyola attends Mass for Pope Leo XIV at White Sox ballpark

June 17, 2025

Loyola representatives attended a Mass organized by the Archdiocese of Chicago in celebration of the historic election of Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV on June 14 at Rate Field, home of the White Sox. The program included music, prayer, and Pope Leo’s first public address to an American audience, delivered through a video recorded at the Vatican.

“It was a joyful and energizing day to be a Chicagoan, a Catholic, and a Rambler,” said Steve Betancourt, director of Campus Ministry. “Our Loyola delegation—from Mission Integration colleagues, faculty, staff, and students—showed up proudly in maroon and gold to represent the Rambler family.”

In May, the Loyola community celebrated the historic moment as the first U.S.-born pope was elected in the Catholic church’s history.

In his message to those gathered at the baseball stadium, Pope Leo emphasized the importance of hope and unity: “You can discover that you, too, are beacons of hope… As we grow in our unity…we can discover that that light will grow brighter and brighter–that light which is indeed our faith in Jesus Christ. And we can become that message of hope, to promote peace and unity throughout the world.”

A recording of the event can be found on the Archdiocese of Chicago’s website.
