Visitation and funeral arrangements for Sister Jean

October 13, 2025

Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM, touched the lives of countless people around the world as reflected in the outpouring of love and kindness since her passing last week. Her spirit of unfailing energy, faith, and warmth will continue to inspire us, just as her presence at Loyola over more than 60 years was a profound blessing for generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

In the coming days, the Loyola and BVM communities will gather to honor her incredible life and legacy. At Sister Jean’s request, seating for the wake service and funeral will be open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Burial will be private and will not be open to the public.

Arrangements

Visitation and funeral services for Sister Jean will take place at Madonna della Strada Chapel on Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus. The chapel will open at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, with a wake service at 5 p.m. followed by visitation from 5:30 to 10 p.m. On Thursday, October 16, the chapel will reopen at 9 a.m., and a Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m., with overflow seating available in Rooney Hall in the Mundelein Center. A community reception in memory of Sister Jean will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the Damen Student Center. Both the wake service and funeral Mass will be livestreamed at LUC.edu/sisterjean. Out of respect for those grieving, filming and photography will not be permitted inside the chapel.

Parking, transportation details, and additional FAQs are available at LUC.edu/sisterjean.

Class and work schedule

Sister Jean always put learning first. Classes will be held as scheduled on Thursday, October 16, with the following exceptions:

  • Faculty may, at their discretion, cancel undergraduate classes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to attend the funeral and reception. If so, faculty will notify their students of the cancellation no later than the night before.
  • If students miss classes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to attend the funeral and reception, they will receive an excused absence and will be given the opportunity to make up any missed work.

With supervisor approval, staff will be permitted to attend the funeral and reception.
