Jamie Wittenberg named dean of University Libraries

October 24, 2025

Loyola University Chicago has appointed Jamie Wittenberg as dean of University Libraries, effective January 1, 2026.

Wittenberg brings extensive experience in academic library leadership, research data management, and open scholarship. She currently serves as assistant dean for research and innovation strategies at the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries, where she oversees collections, technical services, and library technology. In this role, she provides leadership to a division of more than 60 faculty and staff and recently led statewide publisher negotiations that achieved significant cost savings for licensed resources across 15 academic libraries in Colorado and Wyoming, benefiting more than 180,000 students and thousands of faculty members.

Before joining the University of Colorado, Wittenberg served as head of research data management and scholarly communication at Indiana University Libraries and previously led the research data management program at the University of California, Berkeley.

Her research and professional interests focus on open scholarship, research data management, and integrating library resources into academic life.

Wittenberg holds a BA from Bard College, a master’s degree in culture, media, and cultural management from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MSLIS) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She is currently completing her Doctorate of Education in Leadership for Educational Equity at the University of Colorado Denver.

Provost Douglas W. Woods, PhD, shared appreciation for the contributions of the search committee and the leadership of Marianne Ryan, who will continue serving as dean until Wittenberg’s arrival.

“Jamie brings a strong record of innovation and collaboration that will strengthen our Libraries as hubs for research, teaching, and academic engagement,” Woods said. “We are grateful to Dean Ryan for her dedicated service and leadership, and we look forward to welcoming Jamie to our Loyola community.”
