Things to Do at Loyola: August

The fall semester is fast approaching, but there’s still plenty to do at Loyola at the end of the summer. Throughout the month of August, explore community farmers markets, cheer on the Ramblers, and celebrate the beginning of a new academic year with beloved academic traditions. Here are a selection of events to add to your calendar:  

Edgewater Farmers Market

Every Monday June-September, 3 p.m.-7p.m., Broadway Armory Parking Lot  

Explore the Edgewater Farmers Market to purchase fresh vegetables grown by students in the School of Environmental Sustainability’s Urban Agriculture Program. Find out more about how the program teaches students how to sustainably grow and share in-season produce in Chicago’s urban environment here

Women’s Soccer vs. Northern Illinois 

August 7, 1 p.m., Loyola Soccer Park  

Cheer on the Ramblers at the first Women’s Soccer game of the season as the team takes on Northern Illinois at home at the Loyola Soccer Park. Find the team’s full fall schedule here 

Men’s Soccer vs. Chicago State

August 9, 5 p.m., Loyola Soccer Park  

The Men’s Soccer season kicks off with a game at Loyola Soccer Park against the Chicago State Cougars. Find the Ramblers’ full fall schedule here.  

2025 Focus on Teaching and Learning

August 13, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., Lake Shore Campus  

The Faculty Center for Ignatian Pedagogy will host Foundations of Teaching and Learning: Exploring our Teaching in 2025 to reflect on foundational Jesuit education principles to guide teaching methods for the new academic year. Explore the conference schedule here. 

Arrupe College Commencement Ceremony

August 16, 3 p.m., Gentile Arena

Celebrate the academic accomplishments of the Arrupe College Class of 2025 alongside the graduates’ families, friends, and supporters. The ceremony will include a keynote speech and honorary degree presentation to Rev. Michael J. Garanzini, president, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; president emeritus, Loyola University Chicago; candidate for the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Family, friends, and Arrupe graduates are also invited to attend the Arrupe College Prayer Service at 1:30 p.m., in the Madonna della Strada Chapel prior to the Commencement ceremony. 

Fall Semester Move-In

August 16-24, Water Tower and Lake Shore Campuses  

In preparation for Welcome Week and the beginning of the fall semester, Loyola’s Residence Life will welcome thousands of new and returning students to its residence halls on the Water Tower and Lake Shore Campuses. Review move-in tips and important dates here

August Organ Concert Series

August 17, 3 p.m., Madonna della Strada Chapel

Catch a free performance on Madonna della Strada’s pipe organ by Stephen C. Price, inaugural Paul B. Fritts Fellow and Artist-in-Residence in organ performance at the University of Washington. 

Welcome Week

August 18-30, Water Tower and Lake Shore Campuses 

Welcome Week is an opportunity for new Ramblers to prepare for their academic journey at Loyola, learn more about campus life, and connect with fellow incoming students. Led by The Center for Student Engagement, the week will include activities to build Rambler spirit, engage in service, and participate in treasured Loyola traditions.  

University Convocation 

August 21, 10:30 a.m., Jo Ann Rooney Hall 

University Convocation will bring together faculty, staff, and University leadership to gather on the Lake Shore campus to celebrate the dedication of faculty and staff, reaffirm Loyola’s academic mission, and hear University updates ahead of a new academic year. The event will be livestreamed at satellite locations on the Water Tower Campus and Health Sciences Campus.  

New Student Convocation

August 22, 3 p.m., Gentile Arena  

New Student Convocation is a celebrated academic tradition, where students are welcomed to the University community by the president, provost, faculty, and staff. New students will enter through the green doors of Cudahy Library, marking the official beginning of their academic careers at Loyola.
