Loyola launches strategic plan to guide next decade of growth

September 16, 2025

Loyola University Chicago officially launched its new strategic plan, For the Greater Good, with the endorsement of Loyola’s Board of Trustees at its recent meeting. The plan provides a framework for action and sets ambitious priorities to guide the University’s development in education, research, service, and leadership.

For the Greater Good honors Loyola’s history while positioning us for the future,” said President Mark C. Reed. “It will guide our thinking and actions for the next five to ten years, creating a path to a future of continued impact and growth.”

Reed added, “The strategic plan does not contain everything Loyola does, but it articulates a unifying purpose around major themes and priorities.”

Plan framework

For The Greater Good is built around four strategic pillars, each anchored by priorities:

  • Deliver on the Promise of a Jesuit Education: strengthening the liberal arts–based core curriculum, offering academic programs and supports that prepare students for successful futures, and ensuring every undergraduate engages in high-impact learning experiences such as research, study abroad, internships, and service.
  • Elevate Our Reputation and External Impact through Research and Engagement: investing in research and scholarship that address pressing challenges, raising Loyola’s national and global profile, and expanding engagement with Jesuit, Catholic, and alumni networks.
  • Deepen Our Jesuit, Catholic Culture: fostering a diverse, inclusive community rooted in Catholic Social Teaching and Jesuit values, while deepening mission formation for faculty and staff and strengthening the presence of the Jesuit community on campus.
  • Prepare Our Institutional Capacity for Future Growth: adapting enrollment strategies, expanding research capacity, modernizing systems, and developing first-class facilities to support Loyola’s long-term success.
“Loyola is in the strong position to shape our own future and advance our mission of ‘seeking God in all things and working to expand knowledge in the service of humanity through learning, justice, and faith.’”

— Douglas W. Woods, provost and chief academic officer

For the Greater Good is shaped by extensive input from trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and Jesuit partners. The pillars and strategic initiatives reflect deep collaboration and discernment across the Loyola community. The plan aligns with two other mission-driven planning initiatives: the Campus Plan, which outlines investments in facilities and infrastructure, and the Campaign Plan, which will engage the Loyola community and attract the needed resources for scholarships, capital projects, and other priorities.

“The strategic plan is ambitious yet achievable,” said Provost Douglas W. Woods. “Loyola is in the strong position to shape our own future and advance our mission of ‘seeking God in all things and working to expand knowledge in the service of humanity through learning, justice, and faith.’”

Looking ahead

Implementation of the plan has already begun this academic year, with major initiatives underway. Each academic and administrative unit will align its own goals to the four strategic pillars. Progress will be tracked through measurable outcomes and shared with the community. Updates will be available on the Strategic Plan website, which will serve as the central hub for resources, milestones, and opportunities for engagement.
